I like alcoholic beverages

However, I don't think it is a good idea to allow unlimited amounts of alcoholic beverages to be poured down my gullet every night.

I also like immigrants.* However...

The idea that anyone who wants reasonable control of immigration is a "xenophobe" is every bit as sensible as the idea that someone who does not want to engage in unlimited consumption of alcohol every night is an "alcoholaphobe."

* For instance, I happened to have a party at my apartment tonight: 13 out of 15 attendees were immigrants.

  1. If you don't want unlimited amounts of alcoholic beverages to be poured down your gullet, don't pour. Obviously I agree that nobody should hold you down and do the pouring over your protests.

Someone crossing a gang turf line 2,000 miles away from you without the gang's permission isn't forcing anything on you.

    1. The point of this analogy is just to show that the "xenophobia" complaint is simply a smear. (Of course there exist xenophobes, but one can want reasonable immigration controls without being one.)

This was NOT an argument for immigration controls. (Of course, I've made such arguments, but THIS is not one of them!)

Did you not get that this is what I was posting about?

    2. "Someone crossing a gang turf line 2,000 miles away from you without the gang's permission…"

How long are you going to think the US is a gang.

      "…isn't forcing anything on you."

In some sense, it actually is.

  2. No, I didn't get that that was what you were posting about. Probably has something to do with how bizarre and at variance with reality I find the phrase "reasonable immigration controls."

    1. Yes, I know people who find phrases like "reasonable limits to alcohol consumption" and "reasonable limits to to weapon ownership" bizarre as well.

      It takes all kinds.

  3. It's also curious that anyone who opposed apartheid would not be a bit concerned by the appearance of no-go zones in Europe, where natives and their laws are unwelcome, and the immigrants weild complete informal extragovernmental authority.
